H.E. Markus Leitner
Ambassador of Switzerland to the United Kingdom

Biography

Markus Leitner was born in 1966 in Zurich and is a citizen of the City of Zurich. He completed his studies with a degree in Economics at the Zurich University of Applied Science and the University of Fribourg. After various positions in the private sector, he joined the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in 1996 and undertook his diplomatic training in Berne (1996/97) and Madrid (1997/98). On his return to Berne, he dealt with Swiss financial center issues (e.g. banking secrecy, politically exposed persons, blood diamonds) in the Economics and Finance Division.

From 2002 to 2006 Mr Leitner was responsible for economic and scientific affairs at the Embassy of Switzerland in Pretoria. From 2006 to 2008, he was posted in Santiago de Chile as Deputy Head of Mission. From 2009 to 2010, Mr Leitner headed the Peace Policy Section in Berne and was appointed Deputy Head of the Human Security Division at the beginning of 2011 until mid-2013. In June 2013, Mr Leitner became the Ambassador of Switzerland in Egypt. He was subsequently appointed Ambassador of Switzerland to the Islamic Republic of Iran and assumed the position in August 2017. Since August 2021, Markus Leitner serves as the Swiss Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Emad Mostaque is the founder and CEO of Stability AI, which he launched in 2020 with a mission to democratize AI and build the foundation to activate humanity’s potential.

Emad also serves as the Chief Architect of the Collective and Augmented Intelligence against COVID-19, a platform that dynamically maps knowledge about the virus and provides solutions by connecting local initiatives.

Prior to founding Stability AI, he launched Symmitree in 2019, a startup whose goal was to reduce the cost of smartphone and internet access in underdeveloped communities.

He began his career as an analyst at The Pictet Group and advanced to the role of hedge fund manager, where he managed global multi strategy, emerging and frontier funds focused on technology. Emad also served as a strategist at Ecstrat and Religare, advising leading funds and governments on geopolitics, technology, oil markets and other areas. He served as co-CIO of Capricorn Fund Managers, where he managed their award-winning Emerging Markets hedge fund.

Emad has a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Oxford.

A passionate film fan, Nick has a long-running obsession for breakthrough science and technologies.
Ed Grefenstette

Biography

Ed Grefenstette is the Head of Machine Learning at Cohere, a provider of cutting-edge NLP models that’s solving all kinds of language problems; including text summarisation, composition, classification and more. In addition, Ed is an Honorary Professor at UCL.

Ed’s previous industry experience comprises Facebook AI Research (FAIR), DeepMind, and Dark Blue Labs, where he was the CTO (acquired by Google in 2014). Prior to this, Ed worked at the University of Oxford’s Department of Computer Science, and was a Fulford Junior Research Fellow at Somerville College, whilst also lecturing students at Hertford College taking Oxford’s new computer science and philosophy course.

Ed’s research interests span several topics, including natural language and generation, machine reasoning, open ended learning, and meta-learning.

Dalith is a global AI-strategy advisor and speaker, sharing her extensive knowledge and experience in the field of AI around the world. She sits in several boards and juries, is leading the Swiss IT Leadership Forum, advises various companies in their AI journey, mentors young women and girls in tech, and teaches AI & Machine Learning in a CAS module at the Applied University of Luzern. Besides her drive for cognitive technologies, she is also a loving mother of two young women, a passionate mountain biker and a big fan of high-heel shoes.

Andre Freitas
Leader, Reasoning & Explainable AI Lab at IDIAP and University of Manchester

Biography

André Freitas leads the Neuro-symbolic AI Lab at Idiap and at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Manchester. He is also the AI group leader at the digital Experimental Cancer Medicine Team (Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute). His main research interests are on enabling the development of Natural Language Processing methods to support abstract, explainable and controllable inference. In particular, he investigates how the combination of neural and symbolic representation paradigms can deliver complex inference. Some of his research topics include explanation generation, natural language inference, and applications in scientific discovery. He is actively engaged in collaboration projects with industrial and clinical partners.
